Potential students visit Lincoln at UCAS Design Your Future Fair at London ExCel

Last week, just under 5,000 young art and design students, looking for ideas as to their University choices, attended the annual Design Your Future exhibition, organised and hosted by UCAS, which this year was held in exhibition hall S1 at ExCel in London Docklands.

Students were able to visit stands from all the major art schools in the UK to discuss study options in Art, Architecture and Design, as well as to see examples student work. Both days were extremely well attended and we were kept busy the entire time.

Representing the College of Arts' Schools of Architecture, and Art and Design were Art and Design Admissions Officer Natalie Mawson (above left), Art and Design Faculty Officer Lisa West (above right), and 3rd year current Architecture student Molly Judge (above centre), as well as Marketing and Recruitment Officer, Laura McCarthy (below centre).

UCAS also organised a series of workshops which were also well attended; the most popular topic tending to be Perfecting your Portfolio advice, which the University of Lincoln, along with other Universities, presented to hopefully potential applicants.

Of particular interest this year on the Lincoln stand was the stunning display of work from current students of BA (Hons) Jewellery and Object, including items of upcycled jewellery which had recently been exhibited as part of a joint upcycling project with BA (Hons) Product Design in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, as part of Dutch Design week last month.  The items which became quite a talking point were the bangles created from used Nespresso coffee capsules, shown below, which attracted a lot of interest, but in terms of design, but also in terms of sustainable design.

If you missed the show, there's another chance to visit it, this time at Manchester Central Convention Complex on 26-27 November.  You will need to book via UCAS and there is a small admission charge.

Come and meet us in Manchester on stand 41 - we look forward to seeing you.

New building for School of Art and Design starts to take shape

After weeks of foundation work, the steel frame has started to go up, and we can now begin to see an outline of the new building which will become the home for the School of Art and Design.  It's fast becoming a reality.

With the Engineering building to the right and the library and Enterprise buildings in the rear of the photo, the new Art and Design building will sit right in the heart of the modern Brayford campus.

Head of School exhibits at The Collection, Lincoln

[sic] at The Courtyard Gallery at The Collection, Lincoln- 29 September – 27 October 2012

[sic] indicates that quoted words have been transcribed exactly as spelled or presented in the original source, complete with any erroneous spelling or other presentation.

Daniel Buren, the renowned French artist once said that it is in the studio that the artwork is closest to its own reality – beyond this place it is prone to endless manipulations, interpretations and vested interests.

In this exhibition, Head of Lincoln School of Art and Design, Dr Alec Shepley takes his studio as his ‘text’ and sets out to transcribe it, purposefully informing the viewer that any mistakes or apparent errors in the transcribed material do not arise from transcription faults but have been repeated intentionally, i.e., they are reproduced exactly as set down by the artist.

There is sense of playfulness - even a form of ridicule or humorous comment on institutional frameworks at large, drawing attention to mistakes, running repairs, wonky constructions, calamitous assemblages, emphasizing erroneous logic and resisting the commodification of art.

You still have time to visit Alec's installation as it doesn't close until 27 October.  If you can't make it to the show, here is a selection of images taken on the opening night, using the Hipstamatic app on a smart phone.  Enjoy!

Degree Celebration for Class of 2012

Yesterday saw the graduation of the Class of 2012 for students from the School of Art and Design.  As always seems to happen during Graduation week, the sun was shining brightly throughout the day.

Above image shows Fine Art students celebrating in the castle grounds following the ceremony in the Cathedral.  From left to right: Leanne Robinson, Rose Mower, Laura Johnson, Sarah Jane Barnett, and Nealie Harding.

We are so lucky to be able to hold our graduation ceremonies at Lincoln Cathedral, which must surely be one of the best graduation venues ever.  Students were emotional as they waited to shake hands with the Vice Chancellor Mary Stuart, and walk across the stage infront of a packed Cathedral.

Professors and Lecturers make their way into the Cathedral at the start of the graduation proceedings.

Fine Art student Kim Woodard was chosen to give the speech during the ceremony on behalf of all the graduating students.  Below Kim is pictured getting ready in the Cathedral centre before the ceremony began.

Celebrations followed in the beautiful grounds of Lincoln castle.  Here's just a snapshot of some of yesterday's graduates.

Hats on!
